Antara Mali
is no stranger to the world of
showbiz. Her father Jagdish Mali is one of Bollywood’s
leading shutterbugs who has captured the who’s who of
filmdom through his lens in the past two decades.
Growing up in a Pune hostel, the independent and lonely
Antara had always been interested in films but never
thought she would become an actress. And when she
decided that she wanted to join films, her father did
all he could to dissuade her. But fate had other plans
and the talented girl made her debut in a small budget
film called Doondte Reh Jaaoge. The film
went unnoticed and to Antara’s dismay, her second film,
Dum Dum Diga Diga was shelved halfway
through.
Her next break came with Ram Gopal Varma’s
Telugu film Prem Katha (with Manoj Bajpai
& Sumant) that did average business but there seemed
little chance of her making it in Hindi films.
After that, Antara did the second lead in Keshu Ramsay’s
Khiladi 420 with Akshay Kumar. Her
sizzling act in the film went unnoticed but when
director Ram Gopal Varma, well known for resurrecting
careers, cast her in Mast, her life
changed drastically. Though her role of Anjali in the
film was short, it gave her a second lease as she hit it
off well with Varma.
But after Mast, she
was once again lost for lead roles. All she was being
offered was second leads. Antara decided to wait. A year
later Varma offered her the role of Kanu opposite Vivek
Oberoi in Company. Company
was beginning of her professional relationship with
Varma that lead to her playing lead roles in films like
Road, Naach, Mr ya Miss, Gayab, Mein madhuri Dixit
Banana Chahti Hoon. In 2005 Antara made her directorial
debut with the film Mr ya Miss.
