Born at Shafipur, a small village near Jalandhar (Punjab), Hans hails from a humble Sikh farm worker family. He drew inspiration from the street musicians and from the holy shrines which had a spiritual
legacy. Ustad Puran Shah Koti once saw this young boy singing in his native village, and was surprised by his extraordinary voice and sweetness. His modesty made him to learn and redact, and he turned this child prodigy into a very creative and mature singer. Slowly Hans acquired distinction and depth, and till today he is the true disciple of Ustad Puran Shah Koti, and possesses the quality of traditional Punjabi Sufiana music.
Besides Punjabi pop and Sufi Hans Raj Hans has sung for
both Punjabi and Hindi films. In fact Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was so impressed by his range that he asked Hans Raj Hans to sing a song composed by Khan in Hindi feature film"Kache Dhage". Hans sang along with Late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib. The duet "Ishke Dee Gali Vichon Koi Koi Langhda" is rated the Top song of Hindi feature film "Kache Dhage".
