Born in a Punjabi household with a musical
background, Ritika Sahni the Oh What A
Babe girl started pursuing a career
in music at a very young age. Jyoti Sahni her mother,
a notable singer in her own right was a major influence in
Ritika's life. She
enrolled Ritika in a music school the moment
she noticed where her interest lie.
All through her academic
endeavors music remained an intrinsic part of
Ritika's curriculum, and not surprisingly, she
literally walked away with the gold medal at
the end of her post-graduation from Rabindra
Bharati University.
Calcutta was where her musical odyssey found
roots. By the time she was 16, Ritika had
specialised in `Bangla Gaan`. She also went
through some intense training in classical
music under the guidance of the well-known
singer Jharna Banerji.
Soon she started to give amateur performances
on stage. By 1997, her first solo modern
Bengali songs album, `Chena Shukher Khonje`,
was released which won her many accolades. In
1996 Ritika had auditioned for Sony Music and
had signed a contract with them in 1997.
Although she started work with them in 1998,
but due to many problems, the release of her
album was delayed for more than two years!
Finally, in 2000, `Ritika`, her self-titled
album was released.
Ritika
besides operating in pop world also does
playback singing in Hindi films. She has sung
for films like Rakht (Oh What A Babe) and Mein
Madhuri Dixit Banana Chahti Hoon among others.
