Talk of dandiya
and one name that springs to your mind is Falguni
Pathak’s. The voice that made the nation
dance
to the tunes of dandiya, has come a long way since her
first Gujarati tinged tones.
Falguni,
today, is a name synonymous to Indi-pop..
It was in 1998 that Falguni
made her foray into the world of Indi-pop. The album Yaad
Piya Ki Aane Lagi became a runaway hit, and
catapulted her into the big league. She followed it up,
in 1999, with Maine Payal Hai Chhankai, which
went on become a million-seller within two months of its
release, and is still a strong catalogue seller,
shipping over 3000 units each month, over three years
after its release.
Come year 2000 and Falguni had
arrived in style, picking important awards such as the
Indian Viewers Choice Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Her third album Meri Chunar
Udd Udd Jaye, carried forward in her style of soft
melodious songs and pop themes setting the flavour of
the period. She says: “All my songs, right from Maine
Payal Hai Chhankai to Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi
have a common central theme - love. That is true for
most of the songs in Meri Chunar Udd Udd Jaye,
too.” And, the way she sang those
love
songs made the youth of the nation go
after her. Love blossomed like never before.
A
talented and energetic performer, Falguni is not just
famous for her powerful vocal talents, but also for her
stage appearance and entertainment. Aptly called by many
as the 'mover and shaker' in the field of dandiya,
Falguni today doesn’t just belong belong to the
Navratri circuit. She is the most sought after and loved
performer even outside the dandiya circuit.
