The Indian music diaspora is as rich and varied as Shoba
Narayan's travels. Bina Mistry was born in Tanzania of
Indian parents then moved to London where she became a
merchant banker.
But she always harbored a deep love of all things Hindi
especially the music. She dumped the bank for a job as a DJ
and record producer and eventually found time to record
herself. Her first hit was "Hot! Hot! Hot", quite something
given the huge success it had had in the 80's with Trinidad
soca star Arrow! But then Bina's version made it into the
film "Bend it Like Beckham" and she and other Bangra
musicians have never looked back.
