Anuradha
Sriram’s lilting voice in the song Nalam nalamaria
from the Tamil movie Kadal Kottai and Meenamma from
Asai won accolades for her, and made her a much
sought-after singer in Tamil films. The success of
her pop album Chennai Girl, for which she won the
South Screen Videocon award for the best non-film
music (pop), has made her popular, and with the
video of the album, she is a familiar face for the
Chennai folks. Classical, pop or film song, she
sings it with elan.
Anuradha
though popularly known for her Tamil numbers has
also sung for Hindi films like Maqbool, Tum,
Virasaat, Bombay, Dil Se, Ram Jaane, Gharwali
Baharwali, Chunari Chunari from Biwi No 1 among
others.
Her urge to sing songs that are not limited by the needs of cinema made her move
into pop music. She released her album Chennai
Girl which became a big hit.
The music
for the album has been composed by her husband Sriram, a noted violinist with the active involvement of
Anuradha. The album stands out for
incorporating many western elements in their compositions.
The haunting ballad "Kaadhal Kaadhal" is reminiscent of Mariah Carey while the assertive "I am a Modern Ponne" leaves no one in any doubt that she is very much her own person. The track "Uyirin Uyire", Anu's version of the Whigfeild track 'When I Think Of You" is surely a foretaste of Tamil dance music.
