When Gurpreet Kaur,
a little moppet of four, lent her energetic vocals
to the delightful Lakdi ki kaati from the film Masoom,
little did she realise that she would acquire a
whole new musical identity and a brand new name
as an adult. Time has passed, and Gurpreet Kaur
is now Preeti Uttam, but the childlike quality in
her voice is still intact. The fact that she is
composer Uttam Singh's daughter has not made
her take her celebrity status granted.
The singer's foray into playback singing also
happened early, when maestro R D Burman
picked her for the bachcha party Lakdi ki kaati
in Masoom. She also sang for Burman in Jhoota
Sachcha, Bappi Lahiri in Bhavna and Raamlaxman
in Tumhare Bina.
It was then her father's turn to use her voice
for an eponymous album. This led composer Rajesh
Roshan to sit up and take notice of her skills,
and offer her films like Dastak, Koyla and Yugpurush.
She was soon in the thick of things, singing in
such films as Jai Hind and Arjun Pandit.
Though Preeti has not made a significant splash
in the world of playback singing, she has managed
landmark efforts like Hey Ram and Gadar
- Ek Prem Katha, where she has made her presence
felt.
