Sophiya
Haque rose to fame as a VJ Channel V. Her amiable
personality and attractive appearance made her a
favorite with many viewers, and led to her being
offered film roles. She starred in a film called
Snip. But Sophia, a trained ballet dancer is today
more known for her dancing skills and item numbers
in Hindi films rather than her acting performances.
Sophiya's first item number was in Sanjay Dutt
starrer Khoobsurat. She was soon seen in another
item number, this time in Mani Ratnam's Alai
Payuthey. Half-British-
Jewish, half-Bangladeshi, Sophiya though a trained
ballet dancer finds it difficult to do Bollywood
dance movements.
With
London as her base Sophiya was part of A R Rahman
musical Bombay Dreams where she essayed the role of Rani.
She was also one of the judges on Channel 4 program
Bollywood Star, a four part series inspired by the
huge success and influence of Bollywood movies which
aimed to find the first British Bollywood star. Sophiya
however came back to Indian films and did an item number
in Ketan Mehta directed Mangal Pandey.
