Shubhendra Rao is one of the most well known
Sitarists of his generation. A brilliant student
of Pt. Ravi Shankar and one of the inheritor's of
maestro's musical legacy.
Shubhendra Rao was born in a musical family in
Bangalore. His father, N. R. Rama Rao, was a noted
disciple of Pt Ravi Shankar. Shubendra Rao's initial
Sitar training was from his father. Pt Ravi Shankar
used to stay in the house of Rama Rao whenever he
was visiting Bangalore and he recognized the musical
talents of Shubhendra Rao. At the age of 18,
Shubhendra moved to Delhi to live with Pt Ravi
Shankar, in the true guru-shishya tradition.
Shubhendra Rao quickly imbibed the important aspects
and intricacies of Indian music. His participation
with Pt. Ravi Shankar, in his solo tours and
orchestras helped too.
Shubhendra Rao now performs regularly in Indian and
world concert circuit, music festivals and has
performed in some of the most prestigious venues. He
has composed for dance bellets like From Temple to
Theater for Ragamala Music and Dance
Theater. He has also collaborated with jazz, Chinese
and Japanese musicians. He has also collaborated
with Partho Sarothy, a fine Sarod player, in several
Sitar-Sarod jugalbandhi's, which try to recreate the
magic of Ravi Shankar - Ali Akbar Khan's concerts.
