Partho Sarathy is one of the most well known
Sarod players of his generation. He has trained
under Ustad Dhyanesh Khan (son of Ustad Ali Akbar
Khan) and Sitar maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar.
Partho Sarathy was born in a musical family in
Calcutta. His father was a noted disciple of Pt
Radhika Mohan Moitra. Shubendra Rao's initial Sarod
training was from his father. Later he pursued his
training under Ustad Dhyanesh Khan (son of Ustad Ali
Akbar Khan). In 1980, Partha Sarothy moved to Delhi
to live with Pt. Ravi Shankar, in the true guru-shishya
tradition. Partha Sarothy quickly imbibed the
important aspects and intricacies of Indian music.
His participation with Pt. Ravi Shankar, in his solo
tours and orchestras helped too.
Partho Sarathy now performs regularly in Indian and world concert
circuit, music festivals and has performed in some
of the most prestigious venues.
