Pt Rajendra Prasanna has no regard for the fad
called fusion. For him, it is something that
classical artistes flaunt for the sake of gaining
commercial mileage. A puritan given to preserving
musical traditions of the Benaras and Rampur
Seswan gharana, flutist Pt Rajendra Prasanna would
rather eat less for a day than sell his art in the
music market of the world.
A master of the flute and shehnai, Rajendra Prasanna
is one of the leading performers of this gharana.
Born in 1957 into a family of established musicians,
he received his training from a tender age from his
grandfather the Late Gauri Shankar, his father,
Raghunath Prasanna, uncles Bholanath and Vishnu
Prasanna. He has also received training from the
eminent vocalists, Hafeez Ahmed Khan and Sarfaraz
Hussain Khan, both of the Rampur Sahaswan gharana.
At the age of eleven, he
was invited to the Calcutta Music Conference and
there has been no looking back for him since.
Prasanna is known for the technical prowess he
wields on his instrument. His fluid and melodious `badhat`
in the true 'gayakiang' is the hallmark of his
presentations.
He has been the recipient of many awards and given
performances in major music concerts in India and
abroad.
