Pandit Raghunath Seth is one of the versatile bansuri masters and
a disciple of bansuri legend, Pt. Pannalal Ghosh. He is
also a popular composer and an innovative musicologist.
Raghunath Seth was born in
Gwalior into a musical family. He was guided in his initial
years by the noted composer and musicologist, Pt. S N
Ratanjankar. Later he moved to Mumbai to get trained by the
legendary bansuri master Pt. Pannalal Ghosh.As a classical artist, he has been giving performances in
India and abroad for many years. He has also collaborated
with jazz musicians on fusion albums.
Raghunath Seth has made major contributions towards the enhancement of
flute design. A major drawback of the flute is the
difficulty to achieve the glissando between fourth note (MA)
and the fifth note (PA). With the result, Pt. Seth, as other
flutists, had to resist from playing many ragas in which the
glescendo was a must. Yet, he did not give up hope. Being
the experimentalist that he is, he did finally come up with
a solution to this problem. He devised a bamboo key, which
enabled him to play all the ragas with equal ease. With the
use of the key, flutists can glide from the lowest to
highest note and vice-versa. Pt. Seth's invention (the key)
has received much recognition from the press and
musicologists. Other established artists have imitated it as
well.
