Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia

The bamboo flute may look like a simple instrument, but in the hands of an accomplished maestro like Hariprasad Chaurasia, it becomes a vibrant instrument expressing the finer nuances of Indian classical music. The broad vista of his imagination has blended the mores of tradition with newer innovations, and he is now an internationally renowned figure.

Hari Prasad Chaurasia was not born among a family of musicians: in fact, his father was a serious wrestler, and wanted quite desperately to get the young Hari into the same sport. Hari wasn't really interested in throwing people over for the rest of his life, and at the age of 15, he began to learn vocal classical music in
Benares, from Pandit Raja Ram.

He would perhaps have continued with his vocal training if not for a chance incident. He once literally stumbled into a flute recital by Pandit Bholanath. The performer's command of the instrument made such an impression that Hari almost immediately switched his attention to the Bansuri.

His development was rapid - he was proficient enough to join All India Radio as a recording artiste while still in his teens. He spent five years in the local Kendra at
Cuttack, before he was transferred to AIR Bombay. The city had its usual effect on talent - Hari Prasad Chaurasia would spend some of his most productive years here.

Influenced to a large extent by Shrimati Annapurna Devi, daughter of Ustaad Allauddin Khan, his music is now endowed with new depth and unrestrained expression.

His contributions to Hindi film have also received widespread acclaim - he co-wrote music with Shiv Kumar Sharma for Silsila. In 1984, he was awarded the
Sangeet Natak Academy 's National Award, and six years later, he won the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar. Hari Prasad Chaurasia remains an eminently respected musician, and his expressive Bansuri still holds sway.
