Born
in 1927 in Varanasi in a family of traditional
musicians, Anant Lal learnt Shehnai from his
father Pandit Mithai Lal. He was later a student
of the eminent vocalist Pandit Mahadev Prasad
Mishra of Varanasi. Besides the Shehnai, he also
plays the flute.
Establishing
himself early as a Shehnai player of repute, anant
Lal served Akashvani as a staff artist for may
years. He has performed widely all over the country,
as well as in Europe, the United States, and the
Soviet Union. Among his students are several well
known Shehnai and flute players of the younger
generation, including his son Daya Shankar. Anant
Lal was honoured with the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet
Natak Akademi Award in 1984 and the Sangeet Natak
Akademi Award in 1989.
