Kala Ramnath is one of the most important young
Hindustani violinists of today and the
contemporary torch bearer of the Mewati Gharana.
Kala comes from a family of south Indian violinists,
which includes such luminaries as Prof. T N Krishnan
and Dr N Rajam. Her grand father Vidhwan Narayana
Iyer trained her uniquely in both Hindustani and
Carnatic traditions. But, what really stands out is
her training under the famous vocalist Pt. Jasraj of
Mewati Gharana. She has also trained under her aunt,
Dr N Rajam.
Gayaki ang of Hindustani instrumental music tries to
imitate the vocal music. In order for an artist to
truly appreciate the intricacies of Gayaki ang, she
has to train under a an expert vocalist. That is
exactly what Kala has done. This makes her into
one of the few violinists trained to be a Gayaki
violinist and her violin has acquired the name,
Singing Violin.
Kala Ramnath has now been accompanying Pt. Jasraj
for a few years in most of his vocal concerts. She
also gives solo violin concerts. She also features
in acclaimed vocal - violin duets with another
Jasraj disciple Sanjeev Abhyankar.
