Dr. Sangeetha Shankar is one of the most important
young Hindustani violinists. She is the daughter
of the great Hindustani violinist Dr N Rajam.
Sangeetha comes from a very illustrious family of
violinists. Her grand father was Vidhwan Narayana
Iyer, a unique violinist and master of both
Carnatic and Hindustani traditions. Her uncle is
the Carnatic violin maestro Prof. T N Krishnan.
She was trained by her mother the great Hindustani
violinist Dr N Rajam. She has inherited her
mother's Gayaki style of playing.
She was a prodigy, quickly learning and mastering
the art. She gave her first concert when she was
just 13. She was also a brilliant student, studying
music in Benaras Hindu University. She also
completed her doctoral thesis from BHU. She started
performing with her mother in violin duet concerts,
both Hindustani and Carnatic. She has also persued a
very successful solo career.
Sangeetha Shankar has also collaborated with several
musicians on well received experimental albums like
Tabula Rasa. She has recorded Jugalbandhi
albums with flutist Ronu Majumdar. She has even
produced a music based series Sur Sadhana
for Doordarshan.
