The entry of the Western Guitar into the
Hindustani Instrumental Music is proved to be an
interaction between EAST & WEST. Dr. Kamala
Shankar alias S. Kamala, the first woman Guitar
Artist has contributed much to the popularity of
the instrument and is one of its outstanding
masters.
Born in Tanjore
district of Tamilnadu, Kamala's musical carreer
started with the training in Vocal music, initiated
by her mother at the age of six. She blossomed to be
a true artist under the valuable guidance from Pt.
Channoolal Mishra and Sitar Maestro Pt. Bimalendu Mukherjee of
Imdadkhani Gharana.
The guitar has only recently begun to be adopted to
Indian classical music, and many players modify the
instrument with their own developments to better
suit the idiom. In this, Shankar is no exception.
Her model, the Shankar Guitar is made from a
single block of wood, with thicker walls and no
sound hole. It has four melody strings, four chikari
(rhythm strings) and 12 taraf (sympathetic
strings).
Kamala has developed the Guitar as a singing
instrument and use the celebrated 'Gayaki' Ang'
with 'Imdadkhani' -'Baj' (the base of Imdadkhani
Gharana) to present her repertoire of Hindustani
classical music.
