Many know Vishal as the duo from the music composer team
of Vishal and Shekhar. An original rockstar who drifted
to Hindi film music, Vishal is the lead vocalist of
Mumbai based rock band Pentagram. In a market
dominated by Hindi and Bollywood music, Pentagram was
voted MTV's artist of the month. Now that's some
achievement.
Pentagam
was started in 1993 by Vishal, Shiraz and Clyde. Radolf
and Papal joined the band in 1994. Starting out by
playing at college festivals, the band got its big
breakthrough when they won the rock competition Livewire
(annual band competition at IIT,
Mumbai) in 1995. It lead to a record deal with Plus Music
and release of their debut album We're Not Listening!
(1996). The album became India 's fastest selling rock
album (more than 23,000 copies in less than a month).
The band's music has evolved over the years from what used to be described as 'Alternative' to what is now Progressive Alternative Pop. They use samples, and
tweaked electronics, and get a fresh sound that's
reminiscent of RATM, but very much their own. |
