When
Hariharan
and Leslie Lewis formed Colonial Cousins, little did they realise that their foray into popular vocal fusion would
make them the hottest act in town.
Their music cannot be pinned down to a
specific genre. Simply put, it is mainstream pop
with strong ethnic Indian sounds. The tunes are
Indian, though sung mostly in English. The feel
is Indian. The basic groove varies from song to
song, using techno, blues, rock or folk beats.
The Way We Do It
, Colonial Cousins; third album, allows
Hariharan and Leslie Lewis to merge different art forms:
ghazal, classical, rabindra sangeet and pop. The
album is also an attempt to push the limits of
tradition. The songs follow no fixed patterns,
no boundaries, no routines. Just two talented
musicians, one a vocalist and the other a
composer - vocalist.
The duo unleashes its unique brand of sound
with
Aatma, which maintains the
delicate balance between classical and popular
music.
Aatma is an accomplishment in its
own right, and marries the tranquil with the
passionate.
Aatma
has found favour with the classes and the
masses alike. Hari's classical bearings blend
perfectly with Lezz's more contemporary
leanings, and the result is pure magic. |
